Having an entrepreneurial mindset while building a digital business

Choosing to be an entrepreneur & business owner is fulfilling, but having the right mindset is very important in our digital world today, where changes are happening faster than clicking on the latest social media post.


SO today I want to cover some important aspects of having an entrepreneurial mindset in this digital age, so make sure you stay tuned for the 5 big tips I share!

First though, what exactly is an entrepreneurial mindset?

It is really a way of thinking that enables you to overcome challenges, be decisive, and accept responsibility for your outcomes.

If entrepreneurship is the practice of creating, developing, and running your own business, then an entrepreneurial mindset is the mode of thinking that helps you achieve those goals.

It is a constant need to improve your skills, learn from your mistakes, and take continuous action on your ideas.



When it comes to running a successful business, the right mindset can be just as important as hitting sales objectives or producing sustainable business models. And absolutely imperative is to not be afraid of failure, in fact learn from your mistakes fast and adapt so you can move forward.

With, 89% of all companies having already adopted a digital-first business strategy or planning to do so, having a digital business mindset is also key to thriving as an entrepreneur right now. And there are some key things we learn from working in the digital world, and can use to adapt our mindset.


So my 5 key tips are:


1. Digital entrepreneurs have a flexibility mindset and need business agility.

The Digital age means the idea of how business is being done, is rapidly changing, and old habits or practices or success don’t always hold true anymore.


As John Maynard Keynes said. “The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones“.


Then you need to be nimble enough to be able to adapt to the changes and implement the new strategies.



2. Develop digital hustle & understand the worth of having digital assets.

“Build it and they will come” is not an option anymore.

You need to know what they want and need before they do.


Digital work isn’t about cold calling and just putting your business ads out there. It needs strategy, psychological finesse & subtle selling.


It’s a skill that is sometimes called growth hacking. Growing your business with small budgets but smart and innovative hustle can be done.


And then pair the digital marketing & sales with actual digital products on top of your current portfolio of assets/ products or services.


Digital assets are becoming the new treasure trove. Web traffic, email lists and your social networks are part of this mix. And managing them correctly and building them successfully takes know-how and very clear understanding of your customers’ needs & online behaviours.


3. Digital Entrepreneurs know that they need to give away their ideas for free.


In the past giving away any of your ideas for free was seen as foolish and dangerous.


The risk was perceived as the donation of your “intellectual property” to your competitors. But yet many digital businesses have proved this myth to be false.


Sharing your ideas builds credibility and trust.


Revealing the idea is one thing but executing it is another. The rude truth is that your ideas are not that new and your competitors already know. Now teach your clients, because the more worth they see in you, they are going to realise they actually can’t do it all themselves, and will come to you for the final sale.


4. Embrace digital marketing & THE benefits it can bring you.

We know marketing has a very intangible ROI, but when done right, the long term benefits are massive.

Tools such as Zoom, Google Docs and Dropbox have provided the tools for global business. Meaning you don’t need your smartest minds to occupy a desk nearby or even your country, it also means you can collaborate & work with different people, in different industries with different levels of experience & expertise.


And this idea isn’t just in relation to your team, but also your competitors and potential partners or collaborators.

Working on your own and being independent is great but there is a problem. It takes time to scale, and time to get it all right and build your audience.


The digital access to everything means you have easier access to the right business partners. Business partners that can accelerate your growth are often already dealing with your potential customers. Working with them can transform your revenue. Which means “Co-opetition” is the new black of marketing.
